Frequently Asked Questions...
i want to be a fashion designer...sewing machine?
I am in 8th grade and I have been sewing since last year, 12 almost 14, for my birthday i want a new sewing machine, but a nice one since i want to be a fashion deisigner. I looked up the babylock BLR but I dont know if that brand is good. the demo on you tube makes it look great here ill show you
it also embroiders, but do I want that? do i want a electronic machine, i want a machine $400 or above, i am spoiled, my dad said since my bro got a $40,000 piano, i get a nice seiwng machine, so ya, my brother is in the CA state concert band, at 16...wow...i feel so stupid compared to him he has a 4.2, i stuggle to get a 3.9. so i want a machine that will last me forever, and i will never consider getting another machine, do fashion designers prefer having a embroidary machine too? I think I want one plus a sewing machine, baby lock looks like the brand for for me, but since i learned on a pfaff those look great too, not singer i hav 1, ewe!
Answer:
I'm going to suggest a slightly different tactic: if you've already got a sewing machine that doesn't frustrate the daylights out of you, consider instead getting a serger. Sergers are much faster stitchers than regular sewing machines, finish seams while they're sewing, and do several jobs (notably narrow hemming) much more easily than sewing machines do.
Having a serger would allow you to make more garments in the same amount of time, thus giving you more time to work on design aspects, or theme and variations sorts of learning.
Personally, I'd put serger experience ahead of an embroidery machine for a designer to be.
If you're interested in machine embroidery, you might want to think about free-motion embroidery. Two excellent books to get you started are Singer Instructions for Art Embroidery, which has been around since the days of treadle machines, and Robbie and Tony Fanning's book, Complete Book of Machine Embroidery (which you'll have to find used or borrow from the library). Any sewing machine can do free motion embroidery.
Here's a clip of someone doing free motion embroidery:

(if you're not a regular reader of Threads magazine, I highly
encourage you to start... poke around on the Threads website also!)
As far as machine embroidery goes, many people have found they prefer to have two machines... one for embroidery only, the other a "regular" machine for construction. Otherwise you get to sit and wait and wait and wait for a design to stitch out before you can sew again.
